Emergency ResourcesDomestic Violence Resources in Michigan: Getting to Safety
Leaving an unsafe situation is rarely simple, and Michigan's domestic violence resources are built with that reality in mind — offering confidential support at whatever stage you're at, whether that's just thinking things through or needing a safe place tonight.
24/7 hotlines. The National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-7233) and Michigan's local domestic violence agencies operate confidential hotlines around the clock. You don't need to be in immediate danger to call — hotlines also help with safety planning, understanding your options, and simply talking through a difficult situation with someone trained to listen without judgment.
Emergency shelters. Michigan has domestic violence shelters across the state that provide immediate, confidential housing, often along with meals, childcare support, and advocacy services. Locations are typically kept private for safety, but a hotline call will connect you directly without needing to know an address in advance.
Legal advocacy. Many domestic violence organizations in Michigan provide free help navigating personal protection orders (PPOs), custody matters, and other legal steps — often with an advocate who can accompany you to court. You don't need to already have a lawyer or know the legal process to start this conversation.
Support that isn't just shelter. Counseling, support groups, and children's services are commonly available alongside emergency housing, recognizing that safety is the first step but not the only one. These services are typically free and confidential regardless of whether you use shelter services.
If you're not ready to leave. Reaching out doesn't commit you to anything. Advocates are trained to support people at every stage, including those who aren't ready to leave yet, and safety planning can help even if you stay in your current situation for now. Michigan On Demand lists domestic violence hotlines and shelters by location, and — like all emergency resources in the app — this information stays available even offline once loaded, since it's not always safe to search for it in the moment.
