Veteran Resources in Michigan: Benefits, Housing, and Support Services

Michigan is home to a substantial veteran population, and the state has built out a fairly wide network of veteran-specific resources — though navigating VA systems and state programs at the same time can be genuinely confusing without a starting point.

Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA). MVAA acts as a central point of connection for Michigan veterans, helping with benefits navigation, employment, education, and housing referrals. Their County Veteran Service Officers, based locally across the state, provide free, one-on-one help filing VA claims — this is often the single most useful first call for a veteran unsure where to start.

VA healthcare enrollment. Many veterans are eligible for VA healthcare but haven't enrolled, sometimes assuming a service-connected disability is required — it generally isn't. Housing assistance for veterans. Filing a VA disability claim without help is one of the most common places veterans lose out on benefits they're entitled to — a County Veteran Service Officer or an accredited Veteran Service Organization (like the VFW or American Legion) can file and appeal claims on a veteran's behalf at no cost, which matters given how often initial claims are underrated or denied on technicalities.
